Origins of Kariyarra
The Native Title rights and interests of the Kariyarra people of the Pilbara region of Western Australia have been established through pending application of Determination as detailed in the following maps.
Kariyarra Country includes the Township of Port Hedland encompassing the largest Seabourne Port of its type in the world.
The country also supports several new and existing mining operations as well as a major influence of energy and infrastructure projects in Western Australia.
MPR acknowledges the traditional owners of country in the geographical regions in which they operate, and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to elders both past and present.
Our People and Culture
The name Marapikurrinya comes from the Kariyarra term for the Port Hedland area meaning the place of “Living Waters” where five tidal creeks meet and flow to the ocean. The name itself is derived from clan language – “Mara” meaning ‘Hand’, “Pikurri” meaning ‘To Point Straight’ and “Nya” meaning ‘Place Name Marker’
The significance of the Marapikyurrinya Resources Pty Ltd logo acknowledges this regional geographic highlight.
Diana’s father, Percy or “Yalkarangu” in their tribal language, was the recognised Traditional Owner of the Marapikurrinya area. From the time Diana was born in the Port Hedland “Locke Hospital” is has been her destiny to teach the culture and heritage of her people to a variety of individuals and Companies now operating or residing on her Traditional Family Lands.
Diana has raised four children and has three grandchildren all of whom still reside in the immediate area. These family ties have led Diana to establish MPR as a vehicle for generations of her family and aboriginal people to gain a sustainable working environment whilst promoting indigenous culture and helping to broaden the knowledge of indigenous people by creatively working together.
