Our Land
Bithari is the Aboriginal name of Alice “Bilari” Smith (1923-2012) used by her siblings. Alice was the youngest of five siblings and was born under the Biliari tree at Sandy Creek on Rocklea Station WA in 1923. She was raised by her Aboriginal family and, although she did not know it at the time, narrowly escaped removal to Moore River. After marriage to Bulluru Jack Smith, Alice continued to in the bush and raise a large family. She retained her language and many of her customs and lived in the Pilbara, when she relocated to Roebourne to allow her children to attend school.
Alice raised nine of her own children and after moving to Roebourne, fostered fifteen more. There she was initiated the establishment of a Homemakers Centre in Roebourne.
Origins of Bithari
The native title rights and interests of the Banjyma people were first recognised in the native title determination of March 11 2014 (WCD2014/001). Our land takes in areas near Karijini national park and extends between Newman and Tom Price. Our country includes BHP’s Pilbara iron ore operations, as well as project areas for Rio Tinto, Hancock Prospecting and Fortescue Metals Group. Banjyma country is rich in minerals and has a large number of existing and potential miners seeking to come onto country.
Bithari acknowledges the traditional owners of country throughout Western Australia and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures; and to elders both past and present.
